Why Do Toronto Fans Hate Alfredsson So Much?
I’m an Ottawa Senators fan and I recently read in the news that the Toronto Raptors are flashing an image of Daniel Alfredsson on the scoreboard video display when the visiting team is free throwing. It’s to get the crowd to boo. I remember when Toronto Maple Leafs fans first started booing Alfie years ago, the media asked him if he knew the reason. He shrugged his shoulders and said he wasn’t sure what the exact reason is. I worked in Toronto a few years ago and asked some fans at the sports bar why they all hate him. I got a variety of answers: "He’s a dick!", "Bad hair!" (Alfie had long hair at the time), "He’s too good to be playing for the other team!", "The hit on Tucker!", … But I could not get a consistent answer. I just think it’s because the rivalry was getting intense and we had started booing Tucker so Toronto fans decided to boo one of ours. No better player to boo than our captain and longest serving franchise player! What do you think?
The reason is
okay, here it goes:
A few years ago the Leafs had a game against some other team. When Mats Sundin’s stick broke he accidently threw it into the crowd. He didn’t mean to do it but he did. Sundin got a one game suspension. The game where he was suspended was against the Sens. When Daniel Alfredsson’s stick broke he immediatly faked a throw of his stick into the stands. He got booed like crazy since Sundin was very loved by the Leafs.
Also because of the hit on Tucker. The referee said it was a clean hit so Alfredsson didn’t get any punishment.
Another answer:
On the first game of a season a few years the Leafs were playing against the Sens. Overtime solved nothing. It was the first year of the shootout. Alfredsson scored on Ed Belfour so his team one. His stick was sent to the Hockey Museum [or whatever its called]. He would always be remembered that the first shootout game was won by the Sens against the Leafs because Daniel Alfredsson scored on Ed Belfour.
I also think because of the Ontario rivalry. Leaf fans are very passionate and they hate the the Sens. That means also hating the captain. They feel like Ottawa shouldn`t have an NHL team.
Also because of the frusturation. Admit it Leafs fans, the Leafs suck. The fans take it out on there biggest rivals, the Sens.
Good Question

There are many reasons but this is the one that tops them all:
On January 8, 2004: Alfredsson mocks Mats Sundin by pretending to throw his broken stick
With an eventual 7-1 victory well in hand, Alfredsson got the ire of Toronto Maple Leafs fans by mocking Sundin, who was suspended from the game for throwing a broken stick into the stands–by pretending to throw his own broken stick into the crowd. The Battle of Ontario was well-established, but this move helped cement Alfie as a villain in Toronto and a hero in Ottawa.
